Barley
Russia’s share in world barley production
Russia occupies a leading position in world barley production, especially in terms of acreage. The first place in the world in terms of area occupied by spring barley belongs to Russia. In recent years, our country produces about 20% of the total volume of barley, which makes it one of the largest producers of this crop in the world.
Barley plays an important role in ensuring food security and development of the country’s agricultural sector. It is an integral part of the agriculture of the Saratov region, making a significant contribution to the Russian economy.
The role of barley in agriculture of the Saratov region
The Saratov region is known for its vast areas sown with barley . More than 500 thousand hectares of this crop are sown here every year, which is about 10% of all barley crops in Russia. Barley is used in the region for both food grain production and livestock feed. It serves as the main source of feed for farm animals and is also used to produce cereals and malt.
Agriculture in the Saratov region operates in difficult natural and economic conditions, where annual precipitation varies from 300 to 500 mm. This requires farmers to use modern agronomic technologies and varieties that can grow effectively in such conditions. Barley, due to its resistance and low soil requirements, adapts well to local climatic conditions, which makes it popular among farmers.
