Agrarians of the Saratov region set record rates of sowing crops

Аграрии Саратовской области установили рекордные темпы посева сельскохозяйственных культур

The 2025 sowing campaign in the Saratov region is demonstrating outstanding results, which emphasizes the high level of organization and professionalism of local farmers. As of May 26, 2025, 2.649 thousand hectares of agricultural crops were sown in the region, which is 87% of the planned area. This is 282 thousand hectares more than what was sown on the same date in 2024 (2.367 thousand hectares). Daily sowing rates range from 50 to 88 thousand hectares, which significantly exceeds last year’s figures.

Progress by region

The sowing campaign has been completed in two districts of the region: Pitersky (103% of the plan) and Rtishchevsky (102% of the plan). In the Arkadak region, more than 99% of the planned area has been sown, and in 13 other districts of the region - more than 90%. These data indicate uniform and successful progress of work throughout the region.

State of crops

  • Cereals: 1,111 thousand hectares were sown, which is 93% of the plan (in 2024 - 1,001 thousand hectares). Durum wheat exceeded the plan by 35% (135 thousand hectares), oats - by 7% (18.9 thousand hectares), peas - by 4% (20.3 thousand hectares).
  • Industrial crops: 1.472 thousand hectares were sown (84% of the plan), including 1.245 thousand hectares of sunflower (83% of the plan) and 16.2 thousand hectares of sugar beets (115% of the plan).
  • Forage crops: Spring forage crops are sown on 43.6 thousand hectares (54% of the plan).
  • Vegetables and potatoes: Potatoes are planted on 6.738 thousand hectares (99% of the plan), vegetable crops - on 11.9 thousand hectares (71%).
  • Winter crops: The winter wedge occupies more than 1 million hectares, with good and satisfactory condition of the crops. Spring fertilizing was carried out on 1,015 thousand hectares, and in some places repairs and replanting of winter crops were carried out.

Providing resources

To successfully carry out field work, the region’s farms have 185 thousand tons of mineral fertilizers, which is 14% more than last year. The fertilizer supply plan has been fully implemented. Also, 71 thousand tons of diesel fuel and 7 thousand tons of gasoline were purchased, which fully covers the needs of the season. Phytosanitary control of crops is carried out on an area of 635 thousand hectares, which allows timely identification and elimination of threats from pests, diseases and weeds.

Establishment of gardens

The planting of gardens continues in the region: as of May 26, work was carried out on an area of 57 hectares, and the process continues.

Comparison with last year

Compared to 2024, the 2025 sowing campaign is ahead of schedule. In 2024, as of the same date, 2.367 thousand hectares were sown, which is 282 thousand hectares less than current figures. This improvement may be associated with favorable weather conditions, as evidenced by optimal reserves of productive moisture in the soil, as well as with an improvement in the technical and resource base of farms.

Table: Sowing progress by main crops

Culture Sown in 2025 (thousand ha) % of plan Sown in 2024 (thousand ha)
Cereals 1,111 93% 1,001
Technical 1,472 84% 1,314
Sunflower 1,245 83% -
Sugar beet 16,2 115% -
Spring fodder 43,6 54% -
Potato 6,738 99% -
Vegetables 11,9 71% -

Potential Challenges

Although current data indicate a successful sowing campaign, it is worth noting that earlier in 2025 it was reported that the sown area in the Saratov region had decreased by 47 thousand hectares. This may be due to weather conditions or changes in crop structure. However, current indicators show that the region is successfully meeting these challenges, perhaps due to improved weather conditions or efficient use of irrigation systems.

Conclusion

The 2025 sowing campaign in the Saratov region is demonstrating outstanding results, with record sowing rates and exceeding plans for a number of key crops. The good condition of winter crops, sufficient supply of resources and strict phytosanitary control create a solid foundation for a successful harvest this year. These achievements highlight the importance of agriculture in the region's economy, which accounts for about 14% of the gross regional product.
