Agricultural producers in the region have begun selective harvesting of sunflowers, Deputy Chairman of the Regional Government and Minister of Agriculture Roman Kovalsky informed today.
At the moment, the first thousand hectares have already been harvested. 1000 tons of new sunflower crop was successfully harvested with an average yield of 10.1 centners per hectare. This year, the area under sunflower sowing amounted to 1.5 million hectares, with an overall plan to collect at least 1.9 million tons of products by the end of the year, as noted by the head of the agricultural department.
Farms from the Pugachevsky, Bazarno-Karabulaksky and Krasnokutsky districts were the first to begin harvesting. The chairman of the Agricultural Consumer Cooperative "Fortuna" from the village of Lebedevka, Krasnokutsk region, Alexey Kalenok, shared that the current sunflower yield there is 17 centners per hectare. A high yield level of 18.8 centners per hectare is also observed in the Bazarno-Karabulak district.
Mass harvesting of sunflowers in the Saratov region is planned to begin at the end of the first ten days of September.
